Is Anxiety Disrupting Your Life or Your Child's?

Are you feeling overwhelmed by worry, sadness, or panic that keeps you from enjoying your life?

Anxiety in Teens and Children

It's not always easy to understand the signs of anxiety in children. As a parent, you may notice that your child refuses to go to school, avoids certain places or situations, is overly worried about making mistakes, asks a lot of fear-based questions, or experiences physical symptoms of anxiety.

Anxiety in Adults

As an adult, you may be struggling with a sense of low self-worth, powerlessness, and constant dread, or you may be avoiding social situations and emotional triggers to such a degree that you can't fully engage in life or meet new people.

Understanding How Anxiety Works

Anxiety is a normal feeling we all experience, and, at times, it can actually be helpful. It is our body’s system of detecting danger.

However, sometimes, our brains send signals about a threat when no danger is present. And when we pay too much attention to these "false alarms," anxiety becomes more entrenched and can begin to affect the way we live. This may lead to symptoms like excessive panic, fear, worrying, trouble concentrating, problems sleeping, and avoiding situations or places for fear that they trigger anxiety.

Some of the Most Common Anxiety Disorders

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is when someone worries a lot about everyday things, even if there’s little or no reason to worry. It affects both children and adults, and it creates situations like constantly worrying that the elevator will fail and fall down, even though this is very unlikely to happen.

Phobias

A phobia is when you are really scared of something. It could be an object, a situation, a place, a feeling, or an animal.

The fear can be so strong that the person will do anything to avoid being near the thing they’re scared of, interfering with day-to-day life, and the thought of facing that situation can lead to persistent anxiety and even panic attacks.

School-Related Anxiety

School-related anxiety is often observed in children and teens when they experience intense worry and fear associated with academic environments. This can manifest as a pervasive fear of failure, excessive concern about academic performance, and a constant need for reassurance regarding their abilities.

Children and teens with school-related anxiety avoid school, experience difficulty concentrating on tasks, and display physical discomfort, such as stomachaches or headaches, when confronted with academic responsibilities. This anxiety can significantly impact their overall well-being and hinder their ability to fully engage in the learning experience.

Panic Disorder

Panic disorders are repeated sudden moments of extreme fear that can make you shake, have trouble breathing, or feel like something terrible is happening.

They can leave you feeling really tired and unable to continue with your day. It’s normal to have a panic attack once or twice in your life, but if they happen a lot in a short time, it could be a sign of panic disorder.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)

Social anxiety disorder can make it difficult for you to connect with others and engage with the world due to a fear of being judged or embarrassed.

Beyond the difficulty of creating and maintaining friendships and relationships, social anxiety can also be an obstacle in daily situations that require interaction with other people, such as going to the store, talking with schoolmates or co-workers, or being a member of any kind of team or group.

Separation anxiety

Separation anxiety is often seen in children but can also happen in adults. For example, when your child lives in fear of being separated from you or other people they are attached to. This may result in nightmares, social avoidance, resistance to new experiences, and fear of being alone.

Do You or your Child Need Help Managing Anxiety?

We all have anxiety from time to time, before a job interview, speaking in public, on an important date, or when dealing with a health issue. The question is, when should you look for help to manage your anxiety?

Avoiding Fearful Situations, Places, or Activities?

You may be ignoring or avoiding your anxiety, hoping that it will eventually go away.

However, doing this can turn your anxiety into a cycle that feeds on itself and leads to long-term negative effects on your mental health and well-being.

Is It Just Part of Modern Life?

You might think that anxiety is unavoidable in our stressful way of life, and we have to live with it.

But there are evidence-based treatments that allow you to manage your anxiety and get back your peace so you can enjoy your day-to-day life again.

Is It Worth It?

Is anxiety costing you your sleep or your relationships or keeping you from performing at school or work? Even on the best days, you seem to be always worrying, in fear that something is about to happen?

Getting your confidence and peace of mind is definitely worth the effort to control your anxiety.

If you have been experiencing anxiety for an extended period of time, and it's interfering with your life, address the root causes of your anxiety with our evidence-based, personalized therapy programs.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) For Treating Anxiety

CBT is an evidence-based intervention that can transform how you perceive yourself and your environment.

CBT focuses on improving attitudes and behaviors by identifying how your past thoughts, feelings, and beliefs shape your current perception and interaction with the world.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a vital technique in CBT for treating anxiety. As humans, we often cope with anxiety through avoidance or escape, but ERP helps you build inner resilience and resistance to fears by gradually facing them. The more you practice confronting your fears, the more successful you can become in managing them.
